Modern technology gives us many things.

At-home nut milk and plant-based milk made easy

Whether you’re looking to eliminate dairy from your diet or you’ve tried every plant-based option in the milk aisle to no avail, making your own nut milk at home sounds like an attractive (and cost effective) option. It also sounds intimidating and can raise a whole host of questions ranging from your skills as a DIY milk maker to whether you really need another kitchen appliance. Of course, there’s also the mess factor and time-consuming nature of making your own nut milk to consider.

Enter Nutr, a machine that allows you to make your own plant-based milk at home in just a few minutes — and without the messy cleanup. The brand is on a mission to not only minimize the negative environmental impact associated with the dairy industry, but to also provide a healthier, preservative- and additive-free option for those seeking it. It comes with a mid-range price point (snag one for $169 at Nutr) and boasts a sleek, compact design that doesn’t take up precious real estate on your countertop.

Nutr is a single-serve nut milk maker that can also be used to make plant-based milks such as oat, soy, hemp, or rice milk. Besides the variety of dairy-free milks you can make using the machine, Nutr can also be used to whip up smoothies, yogurts, soups, and frozen beverages. No matter what you’re making, the premise behind the machine is that it allows you to have full control over what does and doesn’t go into your body — whether that means making sugar- or salt-free milks, or adding your own sweetener such as maple syrup, honey, agave, coconut, or dates.

Nutr comes with two stainless steel measuring scoops, a stainless steel filter, a cleaning brush, and a recipe book that, in addition to providing instructions on how to make homemade nut milk, teaches you how to make everything from pumpkin spice cashew creamer to coconut matcha. The machine is available in two modern finishes (all white or matte black and rose gold) and features a glass lid so that you can get a birds eye view of all the magic that ensues as the machine blends.

How to use Nutr

There are six functional buttons on the machine. Three of them control the heat settings (hot, warm, and room temperature) while the boil button allows you to boil your liquid of choice. There’s also a keep warm and self-clean button that makes cleanup a breeze.

It takes three steps to make at-home nut milk using Nutr: pour one scoop of nuts into the machine using the stainless steel measuring scoop, add your preferred amount of water depending on the creaminess desired, and finally, choose between hot, warm, or room temperature milk before blending. The hot setting takes the longest to run (roughly 20 minutes) while the warm and room temperature functions take up to five minutes. If you’re looking for a smooth consistency, the strainer will come in handy to get rid of any pulp lingering in your milk.

Nutr is a convenient appliance that nixes the need for messy nut milk bags that require squeezing, straining, and cleanup. The milk made from Nutr can be used in the same way as store-bought milk: in coffee or smoothies, as a milk replacement in baked goods, or with cereal, just to name a few.

Though it’s not dishwasher safe, cleaning the Nutr doesn’t take more than one minute thanks to the dedicated brush that comes with the machine. It also has an auto-clean function that allows you to run a rinse cycle with some dish soap and water. Best part? Unlike a food processor or blender, there are no tiny crevices to navigate.

Is Nutr worth it?

If nut or plant-based milks are part of your diet, the Nutr machine is definitely worth the buy. For those used to making their nut milk by hand, Nutr eliminates the need for cheese cloths, tedious straining, and messy cleanup. For those who buy their milks in store, it offers a fresher, homemade option that’s healthier and free of additives.

You won’t have to deal with the hassle of pre-soaking your nuts and seeds overnight (though, for those who prefer a creamier consistency, the timed pre-soak function on the machine lets you soak for up to 18 hours before blending). It also offers the versatility of heat settings, which is necessary for making things like homemade soy milk (and eliminates the heating step when it comes to making coffee).

Finally, if you’re looking to live a more sustainable lifestyle, the Nutr makes it easy to do so. It’s more environmentally-friendly than buying single-use milk cartons, and reduces carbon emissions associated with the dairy industry. The machine is also single-serve, which means less waste since the milk is made on demand, though this can be a hindrance if you like to make your milk in large batches.

All in all, Nutr delivers as a sustainable, hassle-free way of making nut or plant-based milk at home — without the bulkiness (and ear-numbing sound) of a blender.
